Best Electric Fencing for Bears
Best Electric Fencing for Bears is an effective physical barrier to keep bears out of hives, garbage or compost piles. These simple and effective barriers are an important tool in a human-bear coexistence strategy that is more about preventing conflicts and less about reacting to conflicts after they occur.

A device called an energizer pushes electricity through the wires of the fence. This electrical current is not deadly to humans but enough of a deterrent that most people leave the energizer on all the time to keep bears off their property. A voltmeter or fence meter helps you to determine if the system is working correctly by allowing you to test for voltage at various points along your fence.

Bear Deterrent Electric Fences: Effective and Humane

The higher the voltage and the more insulators used on your fence the more effective it will be. Look for a minimum of 0.7 joules to effectively shock a bear. Also consider a surge protector to prevent lightning from burning out your energizer. Finally a ground rod is essential to complete the electrical circuit and keep your bears off your property.

The lower wire should be 7 – 9 inches above the ground to prevent bears from walking under the fence and getting shocked. A wire spacing of 8 – 10 inches is best to help deer and other animals pass safely through the fence without being injured. A conductive metal like copper or stainless steel should be used for the bottom wire of the fence.
